Spain Edge Netherlands on Penalties to Reach Nations League Semi-Finals

Valencia: Spain secured their place in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands, following an exhilarating 3-3 draw at the Mestalla Stadium in Valencia.

The thrilling encounter saw Spain take the lead twice in normal time, courtesy of Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal. However, Memphis Depay’s penalty and a powerful strike from debutant Ian Maatsen forced extra time.

Lamine Yamal restored Spain’s advantage with a stunning strike 13 minutes into extra time, but Xavi Simons equalized from the spot, sending the match to penalties.

In the shootout, Noa Lang and Yamal both missed before Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon denied Donyell Malen. That gave Pedri the opportunity to seal Spain’s progression, and the Barcelona midfielder calmly lofted his effort into the corner, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.

The result extends Spain’s unbeaten run in all competitions to 18 matches and maintains their flawless record in the Nations League since September 2022.

Spain will now face France in the semi-finals, as they continue their quest to defend their Nations League crown.
